Benjamin Moore Neutral Paint Colors: A Guide to the Best Options

best bm neutral colors featured image

Neutral paint colors are a homeowner’s best friend!

And it is true that in the last couple of decades of trending valiantly, this color category can still be a number one option for your home.

Neutrals are colorless and are just the opposite of stark and bold colors – safe but surely appealing.

These hues are derived from the primary and secondary colors that are further blended with white, gray, or black to create a subtle and sober tone.

The results are timeless, relaxing, calm, and refreshing appearance that they offer!

Neutrals aren’t restricted to a specific hue but majorly all around grays, beiges, taupes, pinks, mauves, whites, blues, greiges, and greens.

Benjamin Moore neutral paint colors are truly no exception to these qualities.

All you have to determine is your interior design style and color palette to pick the best possible neutral paint color for your home.

Undeniably, Benjamin Moore offers an endless list of neutrals on their swatches.

Some are dark and some light, whereas some are warm and some are cool – and it all boils down to the vibe you’re aiming to create.

Let’s dive into more about these colors, including the popular, my favorites and more!

What Makes Benjamin Moore Neutrals Anyway?

Neutrals are bound to be calm, relaxing, soothing, and extremely rejuvenating.

Since they aren’t dominant and accent type colors – you have the opportunity to incorporate them into your home without having to commit to huge statements.

However, just how many advantages they offer – it’s equally important to know that not all neutrals act the same way in the same situations.

Yes, they’re known for their “chameleon” type behaviors!

To help illustrate this, I want to show you a few examples from the Benjamin Moore neutral paint deck.

bm neutral color differences

Benjamin Moore Moonshine is an off-white paint color that readily flaunts a touch of pale blue-gray undertone. Yes, you’re bound to observe that in the natural light.

Another neutral color that intrigues me is Benjamin Moore Storm!

This neutral color is a medium-toned gray paint color that can tend to add a cool and bold touch into any space.

Next is Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan is a warm-toned beige paint color that may feel quite warm and cozy when used in a space. It’s derived from the hues of brown.

And lastly, Benjamin Moore Smoke is an attractive blue-gray paint color.

It’s derived from the primary hue blue and further treated with gray to create a pastel-like look.

So, now that you compare them all, you’ll see that the neutrals are available in a variety of tones, tints, and shades.

And that’s why you have to first determine your interior design style, color palette scheme, and the size of your space.

Each one of them has a major role to play in your space and can equally alter the looks and appearances of the surroundings.

The Magic of Undertones in Neutrals

bm neutrals cool vs warm

Each neutral color is different!

They all have different undertones and a different story to share.

Some warmer neutrals like beige, tan, greige, yellow, and rust may end up making your space feel super light, warm, and comfortable.

When diving further deeper into each one of them, it’s important to know that all of them might have a tinge of yellow, pink, or brown undertone.

On the other hand, the cooler neutrals like grays, blues, blush, and greens have the tendency to make your space feel cool and crisp.

They’re not mainstream primary and secondary colors and can definitely reflect a tinge of blue, gray, purple, and green to it.

A Pro Tip: Always determine the neutral paint color swatch in various natural lighting conditions to know the true hue and feel of the color.

Lighting Matters

lighting in neutral painted room

Especially when it comes to the neutral paint colors – lighting does matter!

First, I always like to keep in mind the compass directions and the size of the rooms I’m decorating.

In the north-facing rooms, the warmer-toned neutrals will retain their original characteristics and foster a sense of balance!

Meanwhile, the cool-toned neutrals will either incline to gray or blue due to the cool incoming rays. This isn’t recommended if you reside in a colder region!

Secondly, in the south or west-facing rooms, the warmer-toned neutrals like the tans and beiges may further feel warm and heated!

Avoid this combination in the humid and warm regions.

On the other hand, the cool-toned neutrals like grays and blues may feel more creamy in such compass directions.

You should also pay attention to the Light Reflectance Values of each of these neutral paint colors.

For instance, the natural light will quite likely wash away the undertones of the lighter neutrals. It might look white or off-white due to ample light in the room.

Otherwise, in the case of medium and darker-toned neutrals, you’ll want to allow ample light to penetrate since that can make the space feel lively and not dull.

Yes, don’t forget to experiment with a couple of swatches here and there.

Neutrals in Interior and Exterior Design Styles

Do you know the best characteristic of these neutral paint colors?

Well, they’re timeless, versatile, and will never disappoint you!

You name the design style (whether interior or exterior) – and can have any of the neutral paint colors as a recommendation.

All you have to classify is the particular design style and its characteristics you want to go for.

For instance, the modern farmhouse and traditional interior design styles embrace the look of warmer hues.

So, you’ll want to choose hues like beiges, tans, and greiges to create a cohesive experience.

Secondly, for interior design styles like contemporary, Coastal, and Scandinavian – cooler tones such as grays and blues are embraced!

Choose from either Benjamin Moore Grays or Blue-Grays!
