Industrial Pipe Leg Dining Table

Tasha from Designer Trapped in a Lawyer’s Body needed a table for her eat-in-kitchen area and fell in love with a pipe-legged beauty from one of her favorite stores–West Elm.

Unfortunately, the large table retailed for about $2,000!

Tasha says, “Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen… SO, we decided to make our own, and we were able to do it for less than $200.00 {$180.00, to be exact}!”

How to Make Your Own

A table is a table, so here are the two main parts (legs and top) you’ll be making for this beauty.

Galvanized piping

What’s key to this table’s structure and personality are obviously the pipes. Pipes seem easy enough to get right?

Indeed they are, as Tasha found at her local Home Depot. What’s better is, HD is able to both cut and thread pipes for you.

This is great, but one word of advice would be to call ahead and talk to someone who visually checks the threading machine and ensures it’s working correctly. (Tasha found out the hard way, you can’t fully rely on this kind of thing).

Steel pipe table base

Tasha also suggests going with the darker galvanized pipe instead of the lighter variety and painting it. You could go with the “silver” look if you like of course, but darker is pretty sharp.

Go natural, not paint, as chipping will be inevitable with chairs under a table like this.

Once you have all your 1-inch pipe parts, cleaning and assembly are next.

Stained table top

Tasha used four 66-inch x 10-inch boards for her top. Be sure to rip them down evenly so they can come together nice and clean.

If you have a Kreg Jig to attach your boards, that’s an ideal method for attaching. Once they’re secure, you’re ready to sand and stain.

With the dark iron pipes, a dark stain really completes the look of this table as you can tell in the final photos from Tasha.

Tasha was inspired by the Design Workshop Metal Tabletop from West Elm.
