Kristy of Kristy Dickerson had been on the hunt for the perfect shelves to hang above the file cabinets in her office. She finally found some at Restoration Hardware she liked, but just adding two shelves and the brackets to her cart drove the total to $800! Yikes! With a trip to Home Depot, Kristy had all the materials she needed to recreate the reclaimed wood and metal shelves. She did an amazing job distressing the boards to give them that old, worn look.

Kat from Basil and Chaise shares the steps to achieving that shabby chic look yourself without spending big bucks. Kat was fortunate to find a set of solid wood ladder back chairs on the side of the road that were tired and in need of a makeover. She decided to give one of her new chairs a heavily distressed look with white paint, a paint scraper, and sandpaper. Fresh fabric finished off the chair and gave it a second chance to shine!

Robyn of The Pink Peony of Le Jardin was fueled by her love for Ballard’s monogram art to create a canvas that’s perfect for displaying in a Valentine vignette. The weathered black and cream finish coordinates beautifully with any color scheme and offers an alternative to typical Valentine’s colors.

Larissa from The House on Harrison wanted some candlesticks for her master bath and found beautiful gold and white candle holders from Pottery Barn that were perfect for the space. Not surprisingly, the price was crazy, which propelled Larissa to refab some candlesticks of her own with spray paint and glaze. I think it’s amazing how Larissa’s use of glaze adds such depth and actually gives the appearance of carved stone.

In need of a piece of wall décor for an awkward wall in her living room, Sarah used wood scraps and leftover paint to create this rustic wood art for only $15. Besides saving money, creating your own artwork like Sarah’s allows you to customize it to your liking.
