DIY Pottery Barn Old-World Pots Using Cacao Powder

pb cacao powder paint texture

Dollar Tree crafter Becky (@gigirepurposed) was intimidated at first to try this type of finish on an old clay pot.

After all, getting that Pottery Barn “textured paint” effect can either turn out lovely or go terribly wrong.

But she’s glad she gave it a try!

Now, she has designer-looking lamp bases that cost her $5.00 instead of $300 at Pottery Barn!

And what a great way to use cacao powder as the foundation of the distressed, old-world texture.

Becky’s inspiration came from the Pottery Barn Maddox Terra Cotta table lamp.

Transform Your Old Clay Pot with a Unique Textured Paint Finish

Materials Needed:

  • Cacao powder (or cocoa powder)
  • Spray paint (choose your desired color)
  • Old clay pot (or any surface you want to transform)
  • Masking tape (optional)
  • Sealant (optional)

Steps:

  1. Prepare the surface: Clean the clay pot thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Apply cacao powder: Use a soft brush or a cloth to apply a thin, even layer of cacao powder to the pot. You can also use a mixture of cacao powder and water to create a paste, which can be applied using a brush or a sponge.
  3. Spray paint: Once the cacao powder is dry, spray paint the pot using short, light bursts. Move the can around to create a textured, uneven finish.
  4. Distress the finish: Use a soft brush or a cloth to gently rub away some of the paint, revealing the cacao powder underneath. This will create a worn, distressed look.
  5. Seal the finish (optional): If you want to protect the finish and make it more durable, apply a clear sealant.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different ratios of cacao powder to spray paint to achieve the desired texture and color.
  • Use a variety of brush strokes and techniques to create unique textures and patterns.
  • Consider using a primer before applying the cacao powder and spray paint for better adhesion and durability.
  • Be patient and work in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next.

Remember, the key to achieving a unique, textured finish is to experiment and have fun!
