When deciding on a bed for the upstairs bedroom of her small mountain cottage home, Pam of DIY Design Fanatic knew storage was a must. …

What’s a girl to do when she can’t spend hundreds on a pretty, patterned rug for her front porch? Paint one of course! Check out how Gina of The Shabby Creek Cottage transformed this $20 Wal-mart rug into a statement-making piece for her porch. The ever resourceful Gina made the quatrefoil stencil all be herself using a cereal bowl and a piece of cardboard, traced it onto the rug with chalk, and then went over it with paint. Easy peasy and cheap to boot!

With Halloween officially behind us, it’s time to bring on the Christmas projects. I mean if Big Lots and Kmart can show Christmas commercials, we can definitely get our Christmas craft on, right? Speaking of Christmas projects, my dear friend Jen from Tatertots & Jello has already created a couple of amazing ones! I am just loving this mirror she made for the holidays by distressing it and then adding some vinyl. I’d take it hands-down over her Pottery Barn inspiration, and it was less than one-third the cost.

Jen from House of Wood built this knockoff Land of Nod play stand using plans from Ana White for her two favorite 3-year-old girls for Christmas last year. Needless to say, the pre-schoolers absolutely loved it! And what’s not to love? It’s a “lemonade stand, farmers market, theater, post office, bakery… even a Psychiatric Help booth a la Charlie Brown” all rolled into one. Like Jen says, “The girls are only limited by their imaginations!”

Brit from House Updated needed a simple gray console table for her entryway and loved the color and texture of a cement one from Crate & Barrel (but not the $900 price tag). She took on the task of building her own console table in five simple steps using just a single piece of wood and a curtain panel from Ikea. Here’s from Brit: “It only took an afternoon to make and, best of all, it only cost $25! The result is a sturdy table that has enough texture to make it interesting - it is perfect in our entry!”

Amanda from A Creative Beginning needed a big ol’ mirror to cover a hole above her mantel. Her Pottery Barn inspiration fit the bill, but Amanda could not find a tutorial that actually recreated its exact size. What’s a girl to do but create her own? I’d say her mirror forms a pretty amazing focal point for the room!

Chris and Julie from DO or DIY desperately needed some pizzazz in their guest bedroom and knew the perfect solution would be a headboard that made a BIG statement. However, despite all the tutorials for DIY headboards, Chris and Julie but didn't find anything that quite fit the mark. The couple decided to come up with their own design that combined fabric, tufts, winged sides, and nailhead trim. Julie says, “It makes just the statement we wanted in the room, accomplishing that luxurious hotel look we were going for... although I didn't consider how it would encourage guests to never leave! The best part of this project was that it was a weekend's worth of work that only cost us $100, compared to retail versions that ranged from $800-1500!”

Whitney from Shanty 2 Chic had always wanted a kitchen island but for space reasons decided against it when having her home built. That didn’t mean an island was completely out of the picture for Whitney however. She teamed up with Ana White to design and build this gorgeous wooden kitchen island with casters. Its custom size and versatility make the island a perfect fit for Whitney’s space. Whenever it’s not needed, she can simply roll it away!
