How to Remove a Wall and Other Demolition Tips

August 24, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

wall removal tips

If you need to remodel your home or expand your living space, you will need to remove at least one wall.

There is a way to do it to achieve excellent results. Check it out.

Check if it is a load-bearing wall

Load-bearing walls can be replaced like other walls, but you will need a structural plan for removing this wall.

If it is a load-bearing wall, get the help of an expert to ensure that the removal is well done.

Removing a load-bearing wall without structural support can have dire consequences on your home.

Check for HVAC, electrical, plumbing works

Inspect the wall first. There may be electric lines, plumbing lines, gas lines, or HVAC, and you need to be cautious. You should also plan how you will reroute the lines.

Cover up

Cover up your furniture with a cloth to ensure that it does not get dirty with the dust.

Remember to put cardboard or cloth at the bases of either side of the wall.

This is to trap the dust particles, and you won’t need to clean too much after the demolition.

Wear safety gear

Protecting your furniture and other items in the home are important, but it is also vital to protect yourself.

You need to wear protective clothing during the demolition process.

Wear goggles to protect your eyes, a respiratory mask to keep you from breathing in bad air, and gloves to protect your hands.

Use a Recip saw to cut around a window

If the wall has a window, deal with the spray foam instead of the screws.

Spray foam insulation holds the window in place, and you can only remove the window by getting rid of it.

Elizabeth Plumb from The Home Makers Journal uses a Ricep saw to cut between the window and the frame and it gives her a perfect result. The saw will cut the fasteners and the foam together.

Make sure there is someone at the other end to ensure that the window does not fall off when you finish cutting.

Use a reciprocating saw

Most often, we see people swinging sledgehammers in an attempt to remove a wall.

Although it works and it seems like an easy way out, it is not the most efficient method to use.

Use a reciprocating saw with a demolition blade. The saw does all the work for you since it easily cuts through tough surfaces without much stress.

Use a multitool to slice up a drywall

Use the multitool that has the half-moon shaped blade to cut out drywall.

It cuts really quickly and does not produce a lot of sawdust. It also makes cleaner cuts, and if you need to make patches in the future, it will be easier.

Double your trash bags

Cleaning up is one of the critical stages in a wall demolition.

Set trash bags aside for cleanup and double the bags to make them stronger.

Doubling the bags is vital because the trash will include plaster, nails, pieces of wood, and other things that can easily pierce the bags.

Remember to clean up as you go so that the place will not be too messy.

Additionally, get in touch with professional service like Paul’s Rubbish to remove the wastage eco friendly way.
