One of the most important questions, and likely the most obvious to ask yourself before you move. What makes someone ready to move is going to be different for everyone.
Are you financially ready? Are you mentally ready to take such a leap? Is this a move that sits right with you?
Why are you moving?
Some people choose to move out of their homes for different reasons. Why would someone choose to move out of state?
Generally, it is for an important purpose to that individual. Reasons to move out of state include moving close to someone you care for, moving for educational purposes, work-related purposes, and personal projects.
It is uncommon for people to simply move spontaneously across the country, though it does happen. Knowing why you are moving can be a motivational thing and can help reaffirm why you would go through all of the hassles in the first place.
Are you working with a reliable moving company?
When you work with a company like North American Van Lines, everything is taken care of with a professional checklist.
You can make your own checklist, of course, but experts who have moved cross country numerous times know exactly what to look for and can inform you before you all take off on your long journey.
Do you have everything you need?
Think about all of the resources you will need in order to make this move a reality. Have you saved up enough money? Is anyone else moving with you and are they prepared?
When you think you have everything moved out of your home, be sure to scour the area well and make sure that you are not overlooking anything.
There may be a secret cupboard that you forgot all about that you stashed your great grandmother’s family heirloom in for safe keeping.
Or, perhaps you forgot all about checking the attic for anything of value. Make more than a mental checklist of everything. Make a physical one and look it over more than once.
Do you have a safe place to store potential hazards?
While it may seem like something of a no-brainer, you will want to make sure that you have everything prepared for any temperature changes where you are going.
If you own anything that should not be placed in a place that exceeds a certain temperature, be sure to have that item put into a safe place while you move.
Do you have a working heater or air conditioner where you’re going? It’s not just maintaining temperatures along the way that you will have to take consideration of.
While you are moving, you will likely be placing things off of the truck and into a temporary location while you unpack. This might be a garage or a storage shed. Are you moving to somewhere that is particularly hot?
If so, you will want to keep any potentially explosive objects in a safe place even while you are unpacking.
It may seem like a small detail, but certain aerosol sprays and other chemical-based products do state not to place them within a certain temperature range for a reason.
Will you have pro movers pack everything for you?
Do you want to pack some of your belongings on your own? Plenty of homeowners will want to pack certain personal items with their own two hands and may even want to place certain things in their own vehicles while they move.
This is completely understandable, especially if you have particularly valuable and delicate items that you can easily fit in a safe location in your own personal vehicle.
What is your time limit to move?
Some people are working on a tight schedule and need to get their move done as soon as possible.
Perhaps you are wanting to move where the weather is good and you have only a few days of an open window to get everything done.
Or, perhaps you have a job offer waiting for you where you are going and you need to be in the office bright and early in a week.
Be sure to be open and communicate your needs to your movers in order to make sure you can schedule everything on time before move day comes around.
