6 Tips For Quartz Countertop Maintenance

June 2, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Quartz counter in kitchen

According to Houzz’s 2019 Kitchen Remodel Survey, quartz has now officially surpassed natural stone as the most popular countertop material.

And for good reason. Not only is quartz more affordable than materials such as marble and granite, but it is easy to clean and maintain and is generally long-lasting.

While at the same time often mimicking natural stone looks to perfection. It’s the marble look for less.

No wonder up to 40% of kitchens in the US have quartz counters!

However, even though quartz countertops are highly durable and come with the minimum amount of maintenance – there are still some quartz countertop maintenance methods that you should practice.

By caring for your quartz countertops the right way, you can ensure that they look flawless for years to come.

So read on to find out the 6 important tips for quartz counter maintenance!

1. Cleanup Spills Quickly with a Soft Cloth and Mild Soap or Detergent

Although quartz is not deemed absorbent, some substances (such as red wine) will stain it if left to stand.

To ensure that your counters stay stain-free, wipe up any spills immediately using a soft cloth. If you choose to use soap or detergent, make sure that it is mild and gentle.

2. Avoid Abrasive Scrubbers and Harsh Cleaning Products

Quartz counters are durable, but it is possible to scratch the surface when cleaning quartz countertops if you go at them with abrasive scrubbers and or harsh cleaning products.

So to keep your quartz kitchen surfaces gleaming, stick to soft cloths and gentle products.

Also, to prevent scratches, avoid using knives to scrape off hardened debris, Instead, rather use a plastic putty knife to loosen stubborn dirt or grease.

3. Don’t Set Hot Pots down Directly onto Your Quart Countertop

Although quartz is pretty heat resistant, setting a hot pot down on a quartz counter can cause discoloring or cracking to occur.

Nobody wants brown pot rings on their beautiful counters – or unfixable cracks – so to avoid this outcome be sure to set hot pots down onto boards, trivets or pads.

4. Don’t Use Quartz Countertops as Chopping Surfaces

Because quartz countertops can scratch it is not a good idea to use them as chopping surfaces. Instead, always use a chopping board when doing any cutting work.

Not only will your counters stay scratch-free, but your knives will also thank you.

5. Don’t Overload Your Quartz Counters

Don’t get us wrong, quartz is strong. But, this does not mean that you should stack a number of heavy items onto your quartz countertops.

Stacking things like heavy appliances, boxes or even furniture (such as in a floor remodel) onto quartz counters can result in cracks.

6. Be Careful Not to Spill Strong Acids or Products onto Your Countertops

Are you getting busy with strong chemicals such as drain cleaners, strong acids or things like acetone?

If so, be sure to work with these products in your garage, rather than on your kitchen counters.

While quartz can handle a lot, a spill from high strength substances can cause damage to its finish.

As you can see, maintaining quartz counters well is super simple. If you are considering doing your counters in quartz, this is a great choice.
