How to Prepare for Home Repairs in the Future

12:48 AM By Julia Carlisle

As a homeowner, thinking ahead is crucial. Perhaps you’ve just moved into a new home, and you’re delighted with the way that the fixtures and fittings look.

Or maybe you’re on the verge of finding a new place, and are feeling worried about the amount of repairs you might need to do. Either way, preparing for home repairs is a crucial task.

There are lots of ways to ensure that you aren’t caught out by home repairs.

One way is to save up as much cash as possible before taking on a property so that you’ll always have a buffer.

Another is to take steps to reduce the risk of home repairs being required in the first place. There are also schemes available that can help if you’re stuck.

This article will explore these options.

Saving up

Perhaps the most effective way to ensure that you’ve always got a way to fix any problems that arise in your home is to save up a good store of cash.

The advantage of having cash to hand when home problems arise is that you’ll be able to authorize a repair right away.

It may mean also that you’ll be able to jump the queue when it comes to booking repair staff, as you won’t have to delay by authorizing insurance claims and so on.

Saving cash is easier said than done, of course. It’s likely that you’ll already have a mortgage in place, while it’s tempting to spend saved cash on something fun such as a holiday.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure that you’ve got cash in the bank to cover any urgent problems, such as flooding or broken appliances, while ensuring that you’re also not depriving yourself of enjoying your money.

If you find that you’ve built up a significant cushion of home repair savings but have been lucky enough to not need any home repairs, meanwhile, then you can always spend it on a non-essential, value-boosting repair such as a luxury bathroom makeover.

Find a grant

It may not be a very well-known fact, but there’s a lot of funding available for those who are looking to carry out a home repair project.

Under the terms of the US Department of Agriculture Section 504 Home Repair program, for example, you may be eligible for a loan that you can use for home repairs and then pay back on very favorable terms.

In some cases, there are grants on offer.

While a loan will need to be repaid, a grant doesn’t need to be. In some cases, these grants are offered by specific institutions – such as the Department of Veterans Affairs – and are hence best suited to certain groups.

Either way, if you need grants for home repair, then it’s worth using online tools to find a grant. You may well find that it’s a perfect solution to your home repair woes!

Cut the risks

Realistically speaking, though, saving up enough cash and keeping it on hand for home repairs is easier said than done for most homeowners.

As a result, alternative modes of preparation are needed – and one of these is to cut the risks involved in owning a home. One of the prime causes of the need for home repairs, for example, is shoddy workmanship on previous jobs.

By investing up-front in a quality company that won’t leave your roof leaking or your bathroom at risk of flooding, you’ll be saving in the long term.

It’s also wise to ensure that all household members are on board with the idea of looking after your space.

If someone’s a little clumsy when carrying plates and cups, for example, then it may be worth asking them to take extra care not to cause spills, which could require redecorating or carpet cleaning.

In the same vein, taking the time to do those pesky chores, such as bleeding radiators, can help extend the lifespan of the fixtures and fittings in your home.

Home repairs are not tasks that many people relish.

Required repairs can often spring up at the most inconvenient of times, for example, while finding the money can be tough. However, there are ways to cut down on problems related to the home repair process.

Whether you choose to save up, invest up-front to save further down the line, or even go for a home improvement grant, you’ll always have options available.
