How to Update a Home to Minimize Allergen Exposure

7:51 AM By Julia Carlisle

Allergies can be a major disruption of normal life for those who suffer from them.

Whether they are seasonal or environmental, the frustration of living with daily allergies is a tough pill to swallow.

The last place you want to worry about exposure to allergens is your home; but unfortunately allergens are probably lurking all around without you realizing it.

If you suffer from allergies and are ready for some relief, here are some of the best updates you can give to your home to help you breathe easier.

Remove carpet

All manner of dust, pollen, and other allergens are lurking in your carpet.

Even if you vacuum and clean it regularly, it may not be enough to stop your reaction to the particles in your carpet.

If this is the camp you find yourself in, consider removing wall-to-wall carpet and installing hardwood, tile, laminate, or any other hard surface flooring.

Use machine washable rugs which you can easily pop into the washing machine to clear away allergens.

If you insist on carpeting, check out these carpet cleaning tips to get rid of allergens.

Clean air ducts

Dust and allergens are also lurking in your air ducts and vents.

You can’t see them, but that nice cool air flowing from your air conditioner this summer might actually be making you sneeze.

Air duct & dryer vent cleaning NY can clean your ventilation systems to ensure allergy-free breathing.

Air filters

Air filters can catch particles before they recirculate in your home.

Consider an allergen filter for your HVAC system.

These specially made High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filters are made to catch particles that may slip through other types of filters.

They can remove up to 99.97% of allergens from the air running through your HVAC system.

Exhaust fans to outside

Check to make sure your exhaust fans are actually venting outdoors rather than just into your attic.

Venting into the attic can cause mold and air recirculation, exacerbating the problem of allergens in your home.

Replace curtains with blinds

Curtains, similar to carpet, are magnets for dust and other allergens.

They can be tricky to wash, so unless you want to add washing your curtains to your list of weekly chores we recommend changing your curtains for blinds.

Blinds don’t cling to allergens as much as curtains and are easy to dust and keep clean.

Allergy free paint

Something that probably didn’t come to mind at all when considering how to change your home’s allergy profile was the paint you use on the walls.

If it’s time to freshen up your interior, use an allergy friendly paint.

It may sound daunting to make all these changes to your home, but the improvement in your daily life and your ability to sleep soundly and breathe easier will make these changes well worth it.

As with any home improvement project, be sure to make these home improvement considerations before embarking on your journey to an allergen-free home.
