Let me Upgrade You: Kitchen Island Ideas

May 21, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Kitchen island ideas

The average kitchen remodel costs $150 per square foot. That’s a lot of cash for simply upgrading a space.

When you need to upgrade your kitchen, instead of paying for a costly renovation, why don’t you try incorporating a unique kitchen island?

One simple change can make a lot of difference. It has the potential to change the entire look of your kitchen. If you’re ready to revamp your kitchen space, then here’s a list of some of the best kitchen island ideas.

Island on Wheels

The easiest way to transform a kitchen space is to make it dynamic and multifunctional. If you have a small kitchen then chances are you’ll need to think about a small kitchen island.

However, don’t let this deter you from adding a kitchen island altogether! You can incorporate kitchen island ideas in a truly unique way by crafting an island cart of sorts.

Simply take the island that you want and add casters to the bottom of the legs. This makes the island more functional and it also means that you can move it around how you see fit to allow for more dining, cooking, or even walking space.

For this idea, it’s great to mix and match styles. Think about incorporating open and closed storage spaces for a unique look.

If you want to turn your kitchen into a professional-looking cooking space, then see how a mobile cart looks (you know, the kind you see in restaurant kitchens).

Simple Seating Space

According to Martha Stewart, a kitchen island with seating should allow for at least 24 inches of width per person.

If you want to add a little extra legroom, then the professional homemaker suggests adding a clearance of 9 to 13 inches between where your guests’ knees will go and the bottom of the counter.

If you don’t have much seating space to work with, then you can get really creative and make the seating a part of your kitchen island plans by attaching them to the island itself.

You’ll need more hardware, however, as this design requires that you create a system of pull-down seats that attach to the sides of the outer island.

Change the Countertops

Maye you don’t need to replace your kitchen island. If that’s the case but you still want a new look, then simply change the countertops!

Depending on your desired style, you can do something like skim-coat the counters for a faux concrete look or even make your own solid concrete kitchen island counter from scratch.

Whatever the goal, you can rest assured that even a simple color change will help transform the space.

Explore Your Own Kitchen Island Ideas

What’s important when revamping your kitchen is that you’re doing your research. Make sure to incorporate external kitchen island ideas with your own to ensure that the result is something you’re going to love.

There’s nothing worse than renovating a space in your home simply to find that you liked it better before.
