Six Simple Steps to Improve the Overall Appearance of Your Home

By

When it comes to your home, the essential thing is feeling comfortable within it. However, the appearance also holds some importance.

Having pride in the property you have made to reflect your own personality is something special.

If you are lost for inspiration and a little confused about how you can improve the overall appearance of your home, continue reading for six simple steps.

Declutter

An accumulation of things within a house can make it seem untidy and even give the appearance of being unclean. Of course, that is not necessarily the case, but knowing that people might think that should be enough impetus for you to make a change.

Not only will decluttering likely leave you feeling satisfied with the property’s appearance, but it should also make cleaning the house much easier, especially dusting.

Furthermore, having clear surfaces and generally fewer unnecessary items around the place will make it much less of a fuss when it comes to redecorating.

Change the wall coverings

Simply changing the color of the walls can have a significant effect on the look of a place. After a couple of years, paint can begin to look grubby, even sooner if you have children in the house putting their sticky fingers on every possible surface.

For a quick change, refresh walls by repainting with the same color.

For a greater impact, be sure to choose a different shade. Having a feature wall is another thing to consider. This could be a pop of color through a vibrant tone or some well-chosen wallpaper on one wall.

Don’t forget to do the woodwork too as it can look yellow and neglected otherwise. Not necessarily the easiest of changes to make, but you could employ a decorator to do it for you if you are short on time or skills.

Dress the windows differently

The way in which you dress the windows can have a significant impact on the look of your property. Curtains should hang well and therefore need to be made from a heavier fabric. Thinner ones appear cheap and do not block enough light if you live in an urban area.

A rich color like plum or burgundy is attractive and fashionable for years to come. Alternatively, you may wish to consider blinds. They can look modern and sophisticated, as well as coming in many different styles and colors.

Accessorize

Without wanting to undo all the hard work you did when you decluttered, adding some finishing touches is imperative. Wall art can be a focal point for a room and certainly something to discuss when you are entertaining.

Whether you choose a canvas, a painting or some metallic words, for example, be sure that you will be happy to see that on your wall for a few years to come. When splashing out on art, it is not something you can afford to tire of anytime soon.

A stunning glass vase, a large mirror or an oversized clock on the wall can also work wonders. Don’t be tempted to buy things too soon. Once you have completed the majority of your work, then take a little time to focus on the rest.

Don’t forget the outside space

We often neglect the outside of our properties, preferring to spend time and money on the interiors, knowing that we are there more often than in the garden.

However, a home is not complete unless the outdoors are up to scratch too. Make sure the fencing, doors and gates get a fresh lick of paint on a regular basis.

To keep things easy, avoid flower beds and choose pots instead. Pedestal planters can look elegant and will also make simplify gardening for you.

Choosing plants that will look good all year round is a great idea. You can also add color and interest in other ways such as bright glass lanterns strategically placed around the boundaries.

You can even get canvases for the outdoors, which can add a touch of class. Alternatively, consider hiring someone to paint a mural on a blank wall.

Keep on top of it

Once you have got the house looking as you would like it to, be sure to keep on top of it. Get into a routine when it comes to redecorating.

This helps when it comes not needing to do everything all at once. Spacing things out ensures that you are under less pressure, keeping things simpler for you.
