A More Efficient Home: 5 Tips for How to Save Electricity This Summer

10:15 PM By Julia Carlisle

how to save electricity

Did you know U.S. households spend an estimated average of $426 on electricity this summer?

You may wonder whether you could be saving energy during the summer rather than spending a fortune when the warmer weather hits.

Sure, cooling down your home during high temperatures is important. But, there are ways you can significantly cut your electric bill this summer while staying cool.

Do you want to know more about how to save electricity this summer? Check out the below!

1. Don’t Leave Your AC Running Constantly

Do you sleep with the AC running? Do you leave the AC turned on when you leave the house?

AC systems are surprisingly energy intensive. In fact, up to six percent of the total electricity produced in the U.S. goes on AC systems.

You don’t even need to turn off the AC completely either. You could just turn it down slightly to enjoy savings on your electricity bills.

2. Open Your Windows

You may not need AC at all. If there is a cool breeze during the evenings, you can take advantage of this in order to cool down your home.

Simply open a window and strip down to your shorts and t-shirt to stay cool during the warmer weather.

3. Update Your AC System

Electricity companies like Ambit Energy allows you to get the best rates with their plans. It’s another great way to save money while you are in the process of updating your AC system.

Start by dusting and cleaning the AC vents and units. The filters and coils could be blocked with dust.

Heating and cooling systems need to be updated now and again to run effectively. You could be spending more than you need to on electricity.

4. Install Blinds and Drapes

You may think window coverings are just about decorating your home. However, they also keep your home cool when the sun is shining.

You need to decide between drapes or blinds.

Blinds can reduce the heat in your home by up to 45 percent. While drapes reduce the heat gain in your home by roughly one-third.

Whether you pick drapes or blinds, ensure you cover up your windows when the sun is shining. Don’t leave your windows exposed to heat up your home.

5. Turn on a Ceiling Fan

Of course, your ceiling fan also uses up electricity. However, it doesn’t consume quite as much energy compared with your AC.

Therefore, when you combine your ceiling fan with your AC, you cool down your home more effectively for less. There is roughly a four-degree reduction in temperature when you turn on your ceiling fan.

This also means that under moderately warm temperatures, you may not need your AC at all if you have a ceiling fan running.
