Barista Brew: How to Make a Latte at Home

June 3, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Make a latte

Americans spend more than $74 billion on coffee each year. That is a staggering number! Along with that over 70% of American adults say that they drink coffee.

While this number is significant, it’s not surprising. Who doesn’t love to start their day with a hot cup of coffee or a delicious latte?

But what if you could have that same amazing coffee for half the price? What if you could learn how to make a latte and save yourself both time and money?

Well, you totally can! Keep reading to find out how you can brew the perfect latte from the comfort of your own home!

How to Make a Latte for a Little

Starbucks isn’t the only place you can enjoy that perfect latte you’ve been craving. It’s actually much easier than you would think.

But before we tell you how to make one, here’s a short refresher of what a latte is.

In its most basic form, a latte is a type of coffee made with espresso and hot steamed milk.

But you don’t want to just throw those ingredients together at random.

Here’s what you need to know!

The Perfect Ratio

A good latte is generally comprised of about 1/3 espresso and 2/3 hot steamed milk. However, not everybody enjoys the same exact ration.

That is why it is important to do taste tests. Have fun with different ratios to find out what you like the most!

That is the beauty of making your own lattes versus going to a big coffee chain. There, you are stuck with whatever ratio they give you.

Now sometimes that’s fine, but wouldn’t you like to have more control over how your latte is made?

The Right Coffee Is Key

There are countless types of coffee, all with their own unique taste and feel. The taste of your latte can be dramatically different depending on the kind off coffee you choose.

You don’t have to be stuck with just one type of coffee for your latte. If you want a pure taste, sticking with one kind of bean is great.

But if you want to experiment, you can mix a couple together to get that perfect taste you are looking for.

May the Froth Be with You

The final step in the process is steaming and frothing the milk. You could easily just buy a milk frother.

But if you want to do it the old fashioned way, here’s what you do.

You’ll need something small to put the milk in and you’ll need a tiny whisk. If you can find a handheld mixer for cheap, it’ll make your life much more simple.

You don’t want to over-froth the milk. You should only have a small amount of foam on top. But once again, this is your latte, so you can make it however you want!

The steaming and frothing process doesn’t need to be intimidating, but the Kitchen Professor can help you if you need a little extra encouragement!

Living in a Latte Paradise

As you can see, learning how to make a latte isn’t as difficult as you might think. Figure out what flavors and tastes you like, and then just start experimenting. Taste testing is half the fun!
