By

installing security cameras

If you don’t know how to install security cameras but want to protect your home, look no further.

Security cameras are some of the best things you can invest in because you can prevent trespassing and theft. Many homeowners are starting to install them because they give you extra protection and the process doesn’t take long.

While many people don’t know how to install wired security cameras, it’s as simple as running some wires throughout your house. However, we’ll go over several things that will help you install a security camera system.

Keep on reading to learn more about how to install security cameras!

Required Tools

Setting up security cameras doesn’t require too much work, but you won’t be able to install them if you don’t have the proper tools. Some of the most basic tools you’ll need are an ethernet cable, masking tape, power drill, and a computer.

It’s best to ask someone to help you out with the task because you’ll need to feed a lot of cables through small areas. As you go through the process, you may find that you need more tools depending on what kind of setup you have. However, these tools are essential for any camera installation.

You’ll also need to decide on a camera system that you’ll use. All camera systems have unique benefits, so it can be difficult to between them. If you look at a Ring vs Nest or any other type of camera, you can compare the benefits to determine which one would be best for your home.

How Camera Systems Are Set Up

Camera systems are set up in a variety of ways depending on the shape of a property and where the cameras are being installed. Most homes use wired camera systems that use a set of cameras and a DVR box to manage everything. This DVR box can store video footage, though many people just use their computers.

All of the cameras within the system connect to the DVR box or computer with ethernet cables. Since these cameras are connecting to a DVR box or computer, you’ll need to run a cable throughout the entire house from each camera.

For example, if your computer is in your bedroom but you have a camera that’s on the back patio, you’ll have to feed an ethernet cable from the patio to your bedroom. This can get complicated depending on how your house is built, but you can change things up to make the process easier.

If you’re using a DVR box to store the footage, you’ll need to get a monitor to manage the system. This lets you see live footage along with past recordings.

Decide Where You Want the Cameras

The first part of the security camera installation process is deciding where you want to put the cameras. You have to think about the layout of your home and place cameras in spots that will cover the most area. Most homes will place cameras in corners because they can get a view of an entire room.

When you know which parts of the property you’d like to place the cameras, think of several areas in each location that the cameras can go in case you need to reroute them. If you find a corner that would be too difficult to feed an ethernet cable to, you can find another corner that would cover the same area.

The best areas for cameras are those that have easy access to the inside of a wall or attic. If you can feed the cables into a wall, you can take them through the wall and up into a floor to wherever your DVR box or computer is.

Prepare to Install the Cameras

You won’t have to read a manual to understand how to install wired security cameras because it’s as simple as plugging an ethernet cable into them. From there you can plug them into a power source and mount them wherever you’d like.

After deciding where you want to put the cameras, you must start preparing to install them by drilling holes wherever needed. You can do this by using a power drill and drill templates depending on the shape of your camera.

Many camera kits come with template stickers that let you visualize how much space a camera will take up. They’ll also have marked areas that you should drill out if you want to mount them. If you don’t have these, you can just hold the cameras up to the wall or ceiling and mark everything with a pencil.

Start Installing the Cameras

The next thing to do is start installing the cameras. After you’ve drilled out the mount holes, you’ll put the cameras in with screws and bolts. When the cameras are mounted, you need to feed the cables through the home and to the cameras.

If you don’t have anyone helping you, you can use fish tape to extend the cables into wherever you’re feeding them through. Just tape the end of the cable and start extending it through the hole you made. You’ll then unwrap the tape and your cable will be ready to be inserted.
