Easy Tips For How to Get Rid Of Weeds From Your lawn

By

bucket of weeds in lawn

A beautiful lawn can be one of your prized works of art, one that you love to show off, but one that also takes a lot of hard work to achieve.

You need to spend endless hours spreading the seeds, watering them, and finally cutting the grass in the summer heat.

You may think that all this will be enough to achieve your perfect lush lawn. But, unfortunately, the weeds in the lawn are your prime reason for not achieving the perfect lawn.

Weeds such as dandelions and crabgrass can put a damper on your perfectly looking lawns.

Now you must be thinking about how to get rid of a lawn full of weeds. Fear no more, this article will provide you with a few helpful tips on how you can do just that and get the lawn of your dream.

Pull Out the Weeds

If you want to go the old fashioned way then you can use some elbow grease to pull them out. This way they won’t be able to grow any further.

You just need to pull the weeds by grabbing as close to the root as you can, until you have most of it out.

Your goal should be to stop the weeds from growing back by filling the empty slots.

You can manage this by overseeding after you pull out the weeds.

Cut the Tops Off the Weeds

It might always not be possible to take off the entire root. That’s when you should try cutting off the plant as much as you can. The seeds need to be stopped from getting replanted so you should remove the head.

Your goal should be to stop the seeds from spreading so use a tool that allows you to get rid of as much of the weed as possible.

Smother The Weeds

Weeds will usually grow outward and upwards when they want to protrude on your lawn. You need to stop the weed from growing by smothering the weeds with biodegradable cloth or newspapers.

This way they won’t be able to poke through the soil and ruin your lawn.

Use Citrus Juice

Citrus acids can be used to kill plants as they can strip the protective membranes off from the stems of the weeds.

You can easily make this spray by mixing any form of citrus juice, such as lemon juice, with water.

The weeds will dry down in the sun fast enough as the citrus juice will remove the protective coating.

Block Out the Light

One thing that all plants need to grow is sunlight, and weeds are no exception. So if you can block the direct sunlight to the weeds then it will surely wither.

Now you must be careful not to block off the sunlight to your other plants while trying to block the light for the weeds.

The good news is that you can use mulch or straw to cover only the areas you want to, allowing the other grass or vegetation in your garden to grow under direct sunlight.

Make Your Weed Killer at Home

An easy and affordable way to get rid of unwanted weeds in your garden is to spray them with a weed killer solution.

This is a solution you can make at home easily. All you need to do is mix salt, vinegar, and dishwashing soap to make the solution.

Then spray this solution on the weed. This way the weed will dry out and die.

Use Sugar or Cornmeal

Believe it or not, pouring some sugar on the roots of the weeds will cause the nitrogen levels to go down and make the weeds wilt.

You can even use cornmeal to cover the weeds just as soon as you see them popping up.

Cornmeal can also be used as a preventative measure to stop seeds from growing in the future.

You can easily do this by scattering cornmeal into the area, which will limit the nutrients available in the soil. As a result,  the weeds will stop sprouting up.

Pour Boiled Salt Water

Many plants cannot survive when boiling water is poured on them. You need to mix salt with the water and heat it till it reaches boiling temperature. Then pour the boiling water on the specific area infested with weeds.

The heat and salt will work together to strip the outer membrane of the weeds. This will leave them to die by drying out.

You can use this technique to get rid of the weeds from the edges of your lawn.

Pour Vinegar or Alcohol on Them

You may use white vinegar for cleaning purposes around your house. You can use it to kill the weeds too.

Vinegar can dry out plants in no time so this will be an easy and quick way to get rid of weeds. Just be sure to spray only the area with weeds, and protect the rest of your lawn.

Alcohol is known to remove water from anythings so you can use this to kill the weeds, as they, like all other plants, need water to survive.

Create a solution by mixing some rubbing alcohol with water and just douse or spray the weeds. If the weeds are coated sufficiently they will die in no time from lack of water.

Use Baking Soda

Baking soda has a high content of sodium so it can dry the weeds out when sprinkled on them.

Just mix it with water and sprinkle the solution on the weeds that have extended into your driveway or sidewalk.

You need to be careful while you spraying as the solution can dry out your grass too.

Get The Weeds Covered In oil

If you want to go for a natural way of killing the weeds without damaging the soil, then you can cover the weeds in plant-based oils.

This eco-friendly method works by covering the weeds and blocking its ability to complete the photosynthesis that it requires to stay alive. This will cause the oil doused weeds to die shortly.

Conclusion

Above we have mentioned a few easy and reliable ways to remove weeds from ruining the look of your lawn.

Apply the techniques and work your way to a weed-free beautiful lawn!
