How to Choose a Bedding Like a Grown-Up

3:13 PM By Julia Carlisle

Back in the day, the toughest decision you had to make when picking a bedding is choosing between your favorite cartoon characters for your sheets.

But for adults, especially to those who aren’t familiar with the terminology and jargon typically associated with the bedding market, choosing the perfect bedding for a good night’s sleep can be a little more complicated than that.

But fear not, we’re here to walk you through everything you need to know about choosing a bedding like a grown-up.

Pick a bedding style

Your bed is the main focal point of your bedroom and how you dress it up can affect the entire feel of the room which is why your choice of style when it comes to bedding is very important.

First off, start by deciding what kind of emotional impact you want to receive when you lie in your bed every night.

Do you want a luxurious and modern feel? Or are you leaning more towards a cozy and inviting vibe? There are a lot of bedding options available online that you can sift through for inspiration.

And if you still can’t find a bedding design that speaks to you, consider customizing a bedding set for your own unique style.

Choose the right Duvet

A bed is not really a bed without a fluffy, cozy duvet. The most important thing when shopping for a duvet is to check the tog rating. Tog rating refers to the efficiency of the material’s thermal insulation.

In other words, it will help you ensure that you sleep at the perfect temperature every night. For hot climates, the ideal tog rating is between 2.5-4.5 and for colder weather, it’s usually between 12 t-13.5 tog.

The duvet construction and casing are also important factors to consider; for the construction, quilting and baffle walls are the best in retaining shape and heat.

As for the casing, quality, down-proof casings provide the perfect weight and the most superior feel.

Although down duvets are luxurious, they’re not hypoallergenic, so if you tend to suffer from allergies, opt for wool or synthetic casings instead.

Pillows make all the difference

Other than your mattress, your sleeping pillow is the biggest contributor that determines whether your body is well-supported as you sleep.

It can mean the difference between waking up rested and refreshed, and waking up grumpy and in pain. For a restful night’s sleep, your pillow should be soft enough to be comfortable but firm enough to properly support your head, neck, and shoulders.

Ideally, you want a pillow that allows your neck to be aligned in a straight line with the rest of your spine.

Understand what thread count means

A thread count refers to the number of threads in a fabric per square inch and it’s often used to measure how fine the bedding is. A higher thread count typically equals higher-quality, softer sheets, but that’s not always the case.

Besides, the thread count, the quality of the bed sheets also depends on the quality of the weaving and the kind of fabric used among other factors.

If all the factors are identical in two different bed sheets, then the one with a higher thread count can indeed be more comfortable.

Know what the best materials are

Most bedding materials are usually made of cotton, silk, or linen. Known for its smooth and crisp finish, pure cotton, particularly Egyptian cotton, is a classic choice for that freshly-made bed feel.

Additionally, quality cotton traps the heat in winter and allows the cool air to pass through in the summer, making it the perfect choice for pretty much any climate.

Silk Bedding, on the other hand, is proven to help the skin and hair retain their moisture throughout the night, which can reduce wrinkles, help the skin maintain its radiant glow, and keep the frizz at bay.

For those who prefer a relaxed, simple bedding, pure linen can be the best material. Linen sheets work best in hot climates because they wick away body heat, but the only downside to them is that they tend to wrinkle up pretty quickly.

As children, choosing our bedding was quite simple, pretty much all we had to do is pick whether we want airplane sheets or unicorn ones and that’s it. But, as you can see, choosing a bedding as grown-ups can be a little more complicated.

Even though it might seem like a lot of work, finding the right bedding is totally worth it because, at the end of the day, your bedding will greatly affect your quality of sleep and getting a good night’s sleep is priceless.
