How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress? Your Guide to Better Sleep

3:45 AM By Julia Carlisle

How often should you replace your mattress?

You don’t want to replace your mattress before you have to and spend money unnecessarily, but you also don’t want to hurt your body by using a worn-out mattress.

What a dilemma!

If you’re in mattress limbo, let us help.

Continue reading this article and we will talk about when you need to replace your mattress as well as the best time to buy a mattress.

When It No Longer Serves Your Body

The mattress you bought might not have anything wrong with it per se but just because it doesn’t have anything wrong with it, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t replace it.

Did you get injured since you bought your mattress? Or has your weight gone up or down?

If your body is different than when you bought your mattress, it might be time to switch up your sleeping equipment or make your own mattress

When Your Lifestyle Changes

Have you had your mattress from before you got married or added a child to the mix?

If your lifestyle has changed and you’re finding yourself in a bed that is too small for you, it might be time for an upgrade.

If you have the space to get a larger bed, it can make all the difference in the quality of sleep you enjoy each night.

When Your Bed Is Dirty

You might be thinking, “My bed’s not dirty!”

While it would be great if our mattress fended off our skin cells, dust bunnies and other matter, that’s not always the case.

If you’ve had your mattress for a long time, it could be weighed down with all kinds of gross things that you don’t want to carry around with you.

It’s great that you keep your mattress clean by taking care of the linens you put on it and that you vacuum your mattress but that’s not going to be enough forever.

At some point, you’re going to call your mattress’ time of death due to dirt overload.

If you or someone that sleeps on your mattress has allergies, you should take care of this sooner than later.

When You’re Sleeping With Pain

Have you noticed that you’re waking up with pain? Waking up with pain because of your mattress is not normal.

When you’re experiencing pain after sleeping, check to make sure it’s not from an injury or other problem.

If you haven’t experienced an injury or another problem, a new mattress may be in order.

When Your Mattress Looks Old

When your mattress looks old, it’s trying to tell you something. If your mattress could talk, it would be saying “Replace me, please!”

Since mattresses don’t age overnight, you might not even notice that your mattress is looking a little aged.

Take the time to check your mattress for signs of aging such as tears and worn spots.

Does it have any lumps or sagging spots? What about indentations?

If you notice any of these signs of aging, you might need to start mattress shopping.

What Type of Mattresses Are Available?

If you find that it is time for you to get a new mattress, you’ve got some good options.

Depending on what you like, any of the following mattress types might be a good option for you.

You’ll also have to think about your budget as well.

Memory Foam

If you’re a side sleeper that needs extra support then a memory foam mattress (like a Tempur-breeze mattress) might be a good fit for you.

One of the things people like about memory foam mattresses is the way they slowly form to the body as you sleep.

Side sleepers need hip and shoulder support and memory foam helps with this.

Memory foam is also resistant to sagging you might experience if you’ve owned your mattress for a while.

Gel

A gel mattress is usually a foam mattress that has gel added to it. You’ll notice there is a little bit of a different feel than if you’re sleeping on a memory foam mattress.

If you love memory foam but you get hot when sleeping, a gel mattress might be a good alternative for you.

Gel mattresses are better at dissipating your body heat than a memory foam mattress.

Pillow Top

If you don’t like the thought of gel or memory foam then pillow-top mattresses or can still help the side sleeper.

You may also choose to add a pillow-topper to your current mattress if you just need a little more support and comfort.

You’ll get a similar sinking feeling like you do when you use memory foam and gel mattresses and this helps to keep you back in proper alignment.

Innerspring

Innerspring mattresses use metal springs to provide support to the sleeper.

Check how many coils are in the design to see how much quality you’re getting with this type of mattress.

The number of coils, as well as the way the coils are laid out, will determine how well the mattress will conform to your body.

No matter if you’re a side, tummy or back sleeper, you can usually find an innerspring mattress that can fit what you need.

Many people don’t like the thought of springs in their mattresses nowadays but you have to decide what will work for your needs.
