How Your Bedroom Can Impact Your Mood

By

Most people don’t spend much time thinking about how their bedroom could impact their mood.

However, psychologists and interior designers have recognized that the bedroom environment, in particular, plays a big role on your attitude and how you feel about yourself.

The surroundings of the room where you spend the most time have a big impact on your mood and emotions.

Emotions Often Mirror Surroundings

When you walk into your bedroom, think about how it makes you feel.

A messy, disheveled room might dampen your spirit or cause you to feel anxious.

A cluttered room might make you feel as if the walls are closing in on you.

A bedroom that features an ex’s clothes in the closet or an estranged relative’s photo might make you feel edgy and stressed.

Impact of a Messy Bedroom

messy bedroom

If your bedroom becomes a dumping ground for junk, a place where you work on your taxes or the spot where you respond to your boss’s urgent demands at 11:55 pm on a Saturday night, you’re more likely to associate your bedroom with stress, frustration and disorder.

A disorderly bedroom makes it makes it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

You might be thinking about how you need to run six loads of laundry tomorrow or about your looming work deadline instead of calming thoughts that could lull you to sleep.

The result of a messy room often includes decreased sleep, disrupted sleep, decreased alertness in the morning, lower energy levels and increased irritability or moodiness.

The day after a night of poor sleep, you’ll be less productive and less accurate in the tasks you perform.

Your cognitive performance and reasoning skills could also decrease.

You Control Your Space

Remember that you control your space, it doesn’t control you.

Your bedroom should be a place where you can wind down at the end of a long or stressful day, sleep and enjoy intimacy with your partner.

All of these activities should be pleasurable and relaxing. Fortunately, you can take control over your space in order to eliminate clutter, get rid of stress triggers and promote a sense of rest and well-being.

Create Harmony in Your Bedroom

Many people use the principles of feng shui when setting up their bedroom.

Even if you don’t go full-on feng shui, there are some interior design and wellness tips that could help you create a more harmonious space.

Begin by putting your bed on the north wall. This instills a sense of calm and stillness.

If this isn’t possible, situate your bed diagonally from the bedroom door so that it isn’t in direct alignment with the door.

Next, remove visual clutter. Start by clearing surfaces, such as the top of your dresser and side table.

Finally, take out all of the electronics. Don’t keep your work laptop or phone in your bedroom.

Leave them on the kitchen table. This prevents them from disturbing your sleep and sense of calm.

Choose Soothing Colors

The color of your bedroom also impacts your mood.

You might notice that fast food restaurants use red and orange in their dining areas.

Red an orange are high-energy, stress-inducing colors. Avoid these in your bedroom.

Select soothing colors, such as light grey or taupe. A light blue or mint green is also soothing to the spirit.
