8 Thrifty Garbage Disposal Cleaning Tips

January 7, 2020 By Julia Carlisle

garbage disposal

Garbage disposal is usually part of the hardest working appliance in the kitchen.

We love it because it makes cleaning very simple. It shreds food waste into super smaller pieces that won’t clog pipes. As a matter of fact, its convenience is undeniable.

But when we use it frequently without paying attention to it in terms of cleaning and maintenance, it can cause an unpleasant stinky odour that can be unbearable.

However, getting rid of this odour is not much of a big deal, and the good news is that you can avoid this stench in the first place.

Here are eight thrifty garbage disposal cleaning tips or you can use cheap junk removal service to keep everything in tip-top condition:

Use ice cubes

Get ice cubes from your freezer and put it into the disposal.

Then turn on the unit and run water until the ice is cleared. Cold water keeps the motor, bearings and shredder assembly from overheating.

The ice will help to dislodge smaller food particles, break up any grease build-up and sharpen the blades.

Apply citrus to act as deodorizer

Citrus fruits such as lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit can help your drain stay clean.

The rough citrus peels can also help clean the disposal walls and blades.

Small portions of citrus fruits naturally leave garbage disposal smelling fresh.

Baking soda and vinegar

Another good disposal cleaning method is a paste of baking soda and vinegar.

You must pour some baking soda into the disposal. After which you add vinegar.

Allow the mixture to sit for about five to ten minutes. Then turn on the unit for the water to dispense through the units.

Manual removal of large substances

It may be that a larger item has fallen into your garbage disposal, causing it to clog.

This can trap foul stench. You must first turn off your disposal to prevent the risk of being electrified or cut caused by the blades.

Then use tongs or pliers to remove large items in the machine.

Additionally, get in touch with cheap junk removal to remove and clean all other wastes from the kitchen.

Use hot water and dish soap

sink and soap bubbles

One of the best disposal cleaning methods is to turn on the disposal drain and add an amount of dish detergent to the sink.

Run hot water in the sink until it is about halfway full.

When you release the sink stopper, turn on the disposal and let the entire sink contents drain into the unit while it runs.

It will help fill the garbage disposal with soapy water to get to the upper part of the unit, which doesn’t usually get cleaned.

Routine flushing

Garbage disposal requires ongoing care. Don’t wait for foul smells before you act.

Turn on the disposal and run water through for at least one minute regularly.

This act should be done each time the machine is used.

Use borax

Sprinkling a few tablespoons of borax into the disposal and running water afterwards is also an effective method of cleaning your garbage disposal.

Kosher salt

Kosher salt is an effective abrasive cleaner that can dislodge slimly residue.

You can add a cup or so of salt to ice cubes for extra scrubbing power. Use cold water when the disposal is on.
