Why You Should Go Green For Eco-Friendly Mattresses

August 21, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Concerns about the environment and what kind of planet we are leaving for future generations affect just about everything we do.

It’s changed the way we live on a deeply fundamental basis.

We drive, eat, and make purchasing choices based on how these things affect the planet.

Buying a new mattress is also something that you can do in a more eco-friendly way.

There are mattresses that have a lower carbon footprint than traditional mattresses.

Not only that, but these mattresses are probably better for you as well as the environment.

Here are some reasons why you should go green and choose an eco-friendly mattress.

Environmental Benefits

Of course, the purpose of an environmentally friendly mattress is to have a product that is gentler on our planet.

Mattresses seem like simple products, but in fact, can have a significant impact on the environment.

There are billions of mattresses in the world, and the conventional ones that we have used for decades are manufactured using synthetic chemicals and materials.

These substances are often non-renewable, meaning that the mattresses have to go to a landfill when they are past their useful life.

With environmentally friendly mattresses, they are made using natural and renewable materials.

Soybeans are a common material, as is recycled steel.

In fact, there are some mattresses that are entirely biodegradable, which means they do not take up space in landfills and they do not release potentially harmful toxins as they decompose.

Health Benefits

The reliance on potentially hazardous materials and chemicals can have a detrimental effect on our bodies.

You spend around a third of your life in bed, with your skin coming into direct contact with your mattress the entire time.

Toxins from synthetic materials can absorb into your skin and be harmful to your health.

These substances can include the glues that hold the mattress together or the residue of chemicals used in the manufacturing process.

With eco-friendly mattresses, they are made with natural materials that are not harsh and unhealthy for your body.

Babies and infants can be especially sensitive to harmful chemicals, which can have an effect on developing minds and bodies.

The production of conventional mattresses involves using volatile organic compounds. Do not let the word “organic” fool you.

These compounds are well-known to exacerbate respiratory issues and cause skin irritation. A natural mattress choice will help you avoid these problems.

Sleep Benefits

Believe it or not, an eco-friendly mattress can help you sleep better.

If you have allergies, then a conventional mattress can be especially irritating for you.

They often are made with formaldehyde and other chemicals that can cause your allergic symptoms to flare up.

This can cause you to have difficulty sleeping because you are blowing your nose, dealing with watery eyes, or even wheezing. Green mattresses are hypo-allergenic.

They are made with organic materials, such as natural cotton, that are much gentler on your allergies and will not cause flare-ups.

Comfort Benefits

mattress comfort

When you think of getting into bed after a long day, you probably are thinking about being comfy and cozy and all snuggled in.

The great thing about eco-friendly mattresses is that they are more comfortable than conventional mattresses.

Polyester and other synthetic materials used to make conventional mattresses are not very breathable.

If you are hot, it will reflect that heat right back into your body.

This can cause you to sweat, which is then trapped in the material. Natural wool, cotton, and bamboo are used in the production of eco-friendly mattresses.

These materials are more sensitive to temperature and allow for better airflow through the materials.

This means that if you are overly hot, they will help disperse that heat throughout the mattress and leave you feeling cooler.

Having more materials that are breathable will also reduce moisture so that you don’t wake up in a sweat in the middle of the night.

Cost Benefits

When you shop around, you might notice that generally, eco-friendly mattresses are a bit more expensive than conventional mattresses.

This is not your imagination, but it also doesn’t mean that they are not worth the cost.

With a green mattress, you will be getting much superior quality and comfort for your money.

Eco-friendly mattresses are made with better care and precision than production line mattresses that use synthetic materials and harmful chemicals.

Not only that but because millions of people are looking for ways to be more green, the synthetic materials being used in the production of just about everything we use are getting more expensive.

This is causing the price of traditional mattresses to rise in many markets.

With an eco-friendly mattress, you are making an investment in the health of the planet and in your body.

At the end of the day, you want to lay your body down on a mattress that offers you comfort and peace of mind.

An eco-friendly mattress provides both of those things.

Not only will you get a superior sleep, but you can also rest your head knowing you are protecting the environment and your health.
