These imperfections are nothing major. The cabinets could use some work, and every new place needs a paint job. This is your first home so you want it to look perfect but you don’t have the money to do a complete renovation.
That’s okay, you don’t have to. There are plenty of easy home decorating steps you can take to spruce things up and make an impression.

1. Set the Tone Right Away
Make a great first impression and set the mood of your house by painting your door a fun color. In many countries, red is a lucky color and sends a welcoming message.
Orange and yellow are warm, optimistic colors that will make anyone feel eager to enter your home.
2. Stick to Neutral Shades
It may feel boring, but it’s a good idea to stick to neutral paint shades like beige and gray—at least for rooms that connect together. If your living room and entryway are both the same neutral color, it will make them look much larger than they actually are.
If your guests walk in to see brightly colored walls, it can be a little bit visually jarring. It’s easier to match your decor to neutral-colored walls as well.
3. Your Furniture Should Stimulate Conversation
You should arrange your furniture in a way that stimulates conversation. Create a U-shape with a sofa and two chairs that face each other. A coffee table in the middle will help complete the look.
Avoid pushing all your furniture against the wall. Many people do that because they think it makes the room look bigger, but it doesn’t.
4. Put a Mirror in Every Room
Mirrors are one of the best home decoration and optimization items because they bounce light around to make a room look larger. That is, if you put them in the right spot.
Don’t place one in front of a window, for example. The mirror will reflect the light right back out the window, so it defeats the purpose.
5. Small Updates Will Make a World of Difference
If you have outdated furnishings and fixtures, don’t get rid of them. Polish them up with a fresh coat of paint.
Do you have kitchen cabinets that have seen better days? A little white paint and new hardware will have them looking brand new again.
