Looking around your home one day, you begin to feel that you are wanting to decorate one room and redecorate the other.
Your bedroom needs a little updating and the living room is lacking in personality and style.
Walking through each room your mind says, “It’s time to decorate the house, but I’m on a budget.
Not only that, what kind of look should I go for?” Although you’re on a budget (and who isn’t really) it doesn’t mean you can’t decorate how you want.
Perhaps you’re looking for a minimalist theme that many are going for today.
Or perhaps you want to add an element of sophistication to your space.
Whatever style you choose, you will find that there are countless ideas online to inspire you to decorate or redecorate your home.
Here are five things you can make or do to give your home a personality.
Now I know you’re probably thinking that you aren’t sure enough about your skills to build one of these, but I’m telling you it is super easy using pallets.
Depending on the size of your mattress, you can use 4 pallets for the project.
It’s as simple as attaching them together, painting it, and setting your mattress on top.
Voila! You’ve just made a DIY budget-friendly bed. You can also go further with the DIY project by making a headboard with more pallets as well.
While you’re at it, consider replacing your 10-year old mattress (it’s worth the investment) with a new one.
Can’t decide which type or brand to buy? Perhaps looking at mattress reviews will help you out.
3D Wall Art
Are you standing there looking at your wall and want to go beyond just painting it a different color?
Try out this idea. 3D wall art has been gaining in popularity.
For the DIYer in you, you can make your very own 3D wooden wall art (it’s easier than it sounds, trust me).
Wood has always been a timeless piece of material used for centuries, and wood can certainly give that bare boring wall a unique personality.
For the project, all you’ll need is a 24 x 24 plywood panel, two pieces of 2 x 6 wood to make wooden blocks, and some wood glue or construction adhesive.
You will cut the two pieces of 2 x 6s into varying sizes to make wooden blocks.
Then, glue the wooden blocks to the plywood panel.
Paint or stain your new DIY 3D wooden wall art with a color of your choice and hang it up on the wall.
I’ve made one of these and it reminds me of looking down at a city from a bird’s eye view.
To give your home an element of sophistication, why not try your hand at making your own abstract painting.
If you have paint left over from other projects, all you’ll need is a blank canvas. You can purchase one at your local art supply store.
If you have the time, you can make your own canvas using various materials like old t-shirts or fabric.
Just an FYI though, certain fabrics when used with certain paints will either absorb or repel the paint, making it a little messy at times.
Other than that, making your own abstract painting is perfect for those who have never tried their hand out in painting anything before.
The painting doesn’t have to resemble anything, so just let your creativity flow.
A combination of brown, black, white, and grey colors for your painting will definitely invoke sophistication when it’s displayed on the wall.
Plants and Planters
Perhaps you’ve filled your walls with all the décor you want, and want to add an organic look to your home.
Plants are not only great for looks but are also great in improving the air quality in a room.
Consider displaying snake plants, aloe vera, or spider plants around your living room.
If you like, consider adding a pothos plant to your bedroom as well.
The pothos plant has its own personality with its green heart-shaped leaves and is ideal to get good sleep.
This particular plant purifies the air from harmful toxins, and is low in maintenance, making it functional, practical, and decorative.
Tip: you can paint planters a black or grey color to give it a modern look.
You can add gold or silver patterns on the planters, too, to give it a special luxurious or chic appearance.
Round Rope Rug
So we’ve heavily focused on the walls, let’s look down and give the floors some love.
Sometimes adding a rug in your home will do the trick.
Rugs come in different styles, designs, materials, and sizes. Unfortunately, buying a rug at the store can get quite expensive.
So here’s a DIY project you can do on your own. You will need rope (jute is great but can get expensive if you need a lot of it), a hot glue gun, glue sticks, and some kind of liner.
To make, begin in the middle by hot gluing the rope to the liner in a circular motion.
Continue doing this until you have reached the desired size you would like.
If you opted to use a plastic-type rope, you will find that having a liner beneath your finished rug is beneficial.
The liner keeps the rug in place on smooth or tiled surfaces.
