Outdoor Spaces: How to Design a Garden

August 10, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

designing your garden

Gardening is good for both your mental and physical health.

Are you looking to start gardening and hoping to reap the benefits that come along with it?

In this article, we’ll look at a few tips and tricks on how to design a garden that suits you and your lifestyle.

1. What Does Your Garden Look Like Now?

Before you even pull on your gardening gloves, it’s time to create a map of your garden and figure out where everything is.

You may want to draw this map to scale or it could simply be a rough sketch.

Figure out where your flower beds are, how large your lawn is, and where the old pond is.

2. What Do You Want from Your Garden?

From this, you can more easily work out what you want from your garden.

For example, would you like a larger lawn? Or, is maintaining grass simply not for you?

How about growing your own vegetables? This may require you to construct a greenhouse.

Once you’ve come up with a detailed plan, you know where to begin!

3. Think Outside the Box

If you have a very small garden, you may think there isn’t much choice for how you can design your garden.

But, this simply isn’t the case. Have you heard of a vertical garden? By constructing one of these, you can grow upwards instead of outwards!

With a vertical garden, you can simply and easily block out neighbors and can even grow your own food from kale to basil.

4. Choose Plants Carefully

If you’re not sure where to begin when it comes to buying plants, why not go online to figure out which will work best in your garden.

The internet is a great place to start with your new garden design.

Not only will you find ideas for how to landscape but also for figuring out where to position your new plants to help them grow.

There are hundreds of gardening websites that you can visit to give you a good idea of how to design your garden.

5. Get Professional Help

Do you have a plan and know what plants you want to buy, but are finding that your garden simply isn’t coming together?

The best thing you can do is to hire help for this beginning stage.

If your plan is detailed, it may take some time to build and pull together.

Once your garden is looking good with a green lawn, vegetable patch, and seating area, you can get down to some actual gardening. And a garden can definitely benefit from some compost from your kitchen, and you can definitely learn about electric kitchen composters here and keep your garden all natural at the same time.

How to Design a Garden Made Easy!

Remember, your garden is your sanctuary.

You have designed it to make it a wonderful place for you to relax and unwind.

If you’re struggling with how to design a garden, don’t worry!

There are many people you can turn to from friends who have a green thumb to professionals.
