Solving the Coffee Table Conundrum

May 8, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

The coffee table is a staple of interior design and for good reason. Obviously, it’s a handy place to put your coffee or cocktails, as well as any other beverage. It can also make a beautiful addition to your living room décor.

However, if you want to avoid frustration, you need to solve a few problems as you choose your coffee table and place it in your room.

Problem #1: Poor Fit

Getting the right size of coffee table for your room is crucial. If it’s too small, it looks like doll furniture. But, if it’s too big, it overpowers your living room design.

Like Goldilocks, you need the size that’s just right. So, you need to choose a coffee table that works well with your other furniture.

Start with your living room set. You can check out the voice of customers to find out about interesting furniture selections. Then, add the table that fits it to a T. Measure your couch from the floor to the top of the seat cushions.

That’s the tallest the coffee table should be. Now, measure the length of your sofa. Choose a coffee table that’s two-thirds that long or shorter.

Problem #2: Poor Flow

Have you ever been in a home were trying to get around the coffee table was treacherous? If the flow isn’t right around your coffee table, it’s easy to bump into it or trip on it.

So, placement is an important factor when you’re arranging your room.

You need to leave between 12 and 18 inches of space between the table and the seating. That means if you have a small room, you’ll probably need a small coffee table.

For a larger room, make sure you don’t place the coffee table farther than 18 inches from the sofa and chairs, or people won’t use it for its intended purpose.

Problem #3: Poor Design

A coffee table should enhance your interior design, not detract from it. Unfortunately, it’s easy to get so caught up in the practical aspects that you forget the appearance. Often, this type of furniture is boxy, boring, and dull.

The good news is that you can choose coffee tables that add interest without stealing the show completely.

You can choose from traditional rectangular wood tables, tables with storage space, curved legs, glass tops, or chrome bases, and even round coffee tables with seating.

Problem #4: Poor Quality

One great thing about coffee and cocktail tables is that once you get one, you can use it with many different types of décor.

You can use it for years even as you change your color scheme and décor style. Therefore, you need to get one that’s made of high-quality materials and constructed with care.

The best way to ensure you end up with a durable, attractive coffee table that suits your space is to go to a furniture company that has a wide selection of high-quality coffee tables to consider.

From there, you can choose a table that works best and looks gorgeous with the rest of your living room furniture.
