Few things allow you to express yourself -through your home decor – like a chalkboard pillow. These pillows sell for quite a bit of money in stores, especially when you consider how seasonal the sayings are, but you can easily make your own for a fraction of the cost.
Step One – Gather Your Supplies
The first step in every craft project involves gathering everything that you’ll need. This prevents you from needing to stop what you’re doing and hunt for that next crucial piece of fabric or length of thread. In order to make these chalkboard art pillows you’ll need some black fabric (the size of which depends on the dimensions of the pillow, of course), straight pins, a white paint marker, stencils (if necessary), some black thread, a needle, and some pillow stuffing. You can also make this on your sewing machine, in which case you can skip the needle, since you’ll use the one on your machine.
Step Two – Paint on Your Design
Next, take the section of fabric that will be the front of the pillow and place it on a hard, flat surface. You’ll want to anchor the corners in order to keep the fabric flat while you draw on it. Simply draw your chosen saying on freehand, or use some stencils to trace it onto the cloth. Allow if plenty of time to dry before moving on the next step.
Step Three – Sew the Pillow
After you have the design painted on and have given it time to dry, it’s time to sew the front and back sections of the pillow together. You’ll want to pin the sides together to hold them in place while you’re sewing. However, turn the fabric around so that the sections that will be on the outside of the finished pillow are located on the inside. Sew the sides together, leaving enough room at the top to add the stuffing.
Step Four – Stuff the Pillow
After the pillow is sewn together, carefully turn the fabric right side out. Then add enough stuffing to comfortable fill it before finally sewing the remaining part of the seam. Your pillow is now complete and ready for display!
