6 Important Things to Know Before Buying a Garage Door

May 24, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Garage door buying tips

63% of housing units have garage doors or carports. If you have a garage door that needs replacing, you shouldn’t skimp on quality.

The price of the door isn’t all that you should look at to see if it is high-quality. Continue reading this article to learn what you should look for when you’re making your purchase.

Garage Door Buying 101

We always want to find a good deal but make sure you don’t sacrifice quality for a good deal. You can find the best garage doors on sites like allaboutdoors.net and other sites online.

1. What’s in Your Garage?

Before you choose your garage door, you should check to see what R-value level you need. If you’re just storing some old boxes, you won’t need the same level as if you’re going to be using it as an extra room.

2. Available Colors & Designs

KYIV, UKRAINE – September 02, 2014: Garage door panel replacement. Garage door installation.Don’t make a decision on the color or design of your new garage door without seeing samples. You won’t be able to tell which one is best for you just by seeing an example online.

3. Compatible Door Opener

One of the luxuries of a garage door is that you have a garage door opener. When you upgrade your garage door, you also need to upgrade your door opener.

Make sure the one that you want is compatible with your new garage door.

4. Who Can Install Your Door?

Once you’ve found the color, style and other features that you want with your garage door, you need to see who is available to install it for you.

If the place that you purchased it has installers, you’re likely to look into their installation crew.

Even if they work for the company where you’ve bought the door, you should do your due diligence.

Make sure they have proper insurance, bonding, and training or otherwise, you could find yourself in hot water if you don’t.

5. Is Maintenance Available?

After your garage door is installed, you’ll also need to do annual maintenance. Check to see if the crew that you hire is available to do future maintenance.

You may be able to ask for a deal on the yearly maintenance if you’re buying the door and getting installation through the same company.

6. Upgraded Insulation

Even if you aren’t going to be using your garage as an additional room, you should consider upgrading the insulation.

The cold or hot air in your garage can affect how your house heats and cools as well.

If your budget allows, ask the company you’re buying from if they can give you a deal on upgraded insulation.
