3 Basic Steps to Build a Home to Your Specifications

8:17 AM By Julia Carlisle

building a home

Are you hoping to create the home of your dreams? Building your own home can be an amazing experience.

Building your own home can be an amazing experience that allows you to leave a lasting legacy for your kids and grandkids.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to build a home and your own grand design like the TV series.

1. Great Design: Be Practical

When designing the perfect house you don’t just want to think about what looks great on the outside, you also want to build a house that is practical.

If you are a young couple there is no point investing in a one-bedroom apartment because you might want children at a later date. Instead, you are best to create a three or four-bedroom house that is child friendly.

If you don’t want to do this then give yourself space to be able to expand if you want to. Purchase the land surrounding your house so you can build an extension.

You also need to decide on the location. If you work in a big city like New York then you will no doubt have to compromise on space if you built it within commuting or walking distance.

But if you build your house out-of-town and in the country then your commute will be longer. Can you come up with a compromise or change some aspect of your life to fit around your new house? Perhaps you could move to remote working.

2. Hire Great Builders, Designers, and a Project Manager

A great house doesn’t build itself and unless you are an architect and a builder it’s unlikely you’re going to be able to design and build it yourself.

Instead, hire great staff who can oversee the project and make great decisions. You need a project manager and an architect that you have a rapport with and that you trust to be honest with you.

But you also need a team of builders who can work hard and schedule without slacking off.

3. Be Prepared to Go Over Budget

Another golden tip for building a custom home is to always have some reserve funds and be prepared to go over budget.

The project will always go over budget as not everything goes to plan so having a financial cushion can make things a lot more comfortable and a lot less stressful. This is especially true in the age of the Corona Virus where the economy is so unstable.

You might also change your mind about some aspects of the house and this might require critical laser cutting that you had not expected.

How to Build a Home? Hire Great People

The most important aspect that you need to remember when you build a home is to hire great people.

You need to remember that not everything is going to plan and this could be a rocky road so you need reliable builders and an honest project manager to see you through.
