How to Choose the Best Bathroom Tile Floor: The Top Tips to Remember

October 11, 2019 By Julia Carlisle

Did you know that your bathroom has a twenty-year lifespan?

After that, it starts to get really tired with leaking plumbing, grimy grout, loose tiles, and outdated everything.

If your bathroom is starting to reach its senior years, it’s time to consider a renovation.

This will breathe new life back into your personal sanctuary.

One of your biggest decisions will be the bathroom tile you’ll use.

Use this guide to help you choose the perfect tile for your new bathroom.

Pick out the Must-Have First

picking the best tile

When you begin remodeling your bathroom, there’s usually one tile that you fall in love with.

You have dreams about using it in your new bathroom. You compare everything to it.

Start with this tile. Use it as your reference point for choosing the rest of the tile in the bathroom.

Three or Less

In good design, less is more. Try not to use more than three different types of tiles in your bathroom.

Typically, bathrooms are a small space. So too many types of tiles in such a small space will become overwhelming and look cluttered.

For most bathrooms, there’s a floor tile, a shower or bathtub tile, and an accent tile.

Figure out which category your must-have tile falls into. Then you can focus on the other two categories.

If your must-have tile is a subway tile, then that’s best used around the shower or tub.

But if your must-have tile is a large slate, then it’ll work better as your floor tile.

Stick to One Attention Grabber

We understand, there are so many beautiful tiles out there, you just want to use them all. Don’t do this.

Professional bathroom remodeling services will tell you, too many colorful and patterned showstoppers in one bathroom will look terrible.

Even if you love it, you’ll be the only one. When you try to sell your home, the multiple tiles will be an issue.

It will also date your home quickly as these tiles tend to swing in and out of fashion regularly.

One thing you can do is get creative about where the showstopper is.

You could keep the bathroom neutral and then have a bold color and pattern on the floor.

Or maybe you put the decorative tile around the top of your shower?

Think About Maintenance

Does anyone honestly enjoy cleaning the bathroom?

When choosing your tiles, think about the amount of maintenance you want to put into your bathroom.

If you’re aiming for maintenance-free, then opt for ceramic or porcelain.

If you don’t mind a bit of maintenance, then natural stone might be perfect for you.

Choose Your Bathroom Tile

When it comes to bathroom tile, stick with what you love. After all, it’s your bathroom, and you have to use it every day.

If you’re struggling to get started, pick one tile that you love and build your other choices from there.
