Themes You Can Use to Transform Your Backyard

10:21 AM By Julia Carlisle

Your backyard should be a place where you enjoy spending time. It can also be an ideal entertaining space when the weather is good.

If your yard is currently lackluster it makes sense to transform it.

It can be fun to choose a theme for your outside space. There are many to choose from. Here are some ideas to help spark your imagination.

Rustic

Think how relaxed you feel when you are walking through a wooded area, or strolling across a field.

Now imagine you can bring that relaxation to your own backyard.

The good news is you can if you create a rustic outdoor space. You can bring a true sense of nature to your environment.

Ideas for a rustic outside space include:

  • Creating an outdoor fireplace so that you can remain outside even when the temperature cools in the evening.
  • Choosing wood as a material for furniture, decking, and structures. This helps to maintain the natural feel of your yard design.
  • Using textures such a stone, gravel and shells to continue the natural theme.
  • Choosing warm shades for outdoor lighting to complement the rustic theme.

Japanese

If you want to turn your backyard into a work of art, you may want to think about a Japanese theme.

Japanese style gardens are all about keeping it simple and sticking as close to a natural look as possible.

It can be difficult to find out what type of Asian plants are best suited to your backyard.

However, if you do a little research, you should be able to find enough trees, shrubs and plants to complete your Japanese garden.

Trees that you may want to consider incorporating into the design include coastal redwood, cedar, willow, and scarlet maple.

Plants that you can think about using include Japanese iris and azalea.

For ground cover, think about investing in some moss or some baby’s tears.

In addition to the plants and trees you choose, you may want to think about including a pond containing some koi carp.

Obviously, you would have to maintain the pond, but you get the benefit of relaxing while watching the fish.

Desert

If you live in an area where is little rain, creating a desert landscape in your backyard may be a good idea.

The most important aspect of designing this type of landscape is deciding which plants to use.

Generally, it’s a good idea to choose plants that are native to the area where they live.

You know that they can survive with little water so they should be fine to use in your desert landscape.

Choosing to use grass in this type of landscape is often not a good idea as grass tends to need a lot of water.

You can opt to use drought-tolerant ground cover instead or you can use rocks and gravel to cover spaces where there are no plants.

Butterfly

Butterfly gardens are beneficial in two ways. When butterflies come to visit they are beautiful to watch and you get the benefit of this.

Meanwhile, the butterflies get the benefit of the plants that you choose specifically for them.

When you are starting a butterfly garden you need to research your choice of plants carefully.

Plants that you may want to consider using include:

  • Hollyhock
  • Dianthus
  • Sunflower
  • Roses
  • Marigold

Choosing any of these design themes can help you transform your backyard into a stunning outdoor space.
