This is a super easy gift for holidays, family, friends, or anything in between. If you have scrap wood lying around or your local hardware store has a cull lumber pile, you can easily make these for just a few dollars.
For this project you will need:
- Scrap wood (2x4s, 2x2s, and 4x4s work best)
- Sandpaper
- Paint
The type of wood you have will determine the sort of blocks you can make. If you have 4×4 wood, you can make cubes with different words that will appear on each side as they are flipped around. If you have 2×4 wood, you can make blocks that have a different saying on the front and back only.
With the 4×4 blocks, cut them in to 4-inch cubes. It isn’t necessary for them to be perfect but try to get them pretty close to even so they all match up. With the 2×4 blocks, you can cut them all the same length or cut the the pieces longer than the center. We have made them so they have a cascading effect with a 2×2 in the center on the top.
The word or phrase you want to say will determine the amount of blocks you cut. Try not to make anything too long as it gets tedious, and get creative so each side can be used for a different holiday without having to add or remove blocks.
When you have all your blocks cut, sand them down so they aren’t rough or splintery. Paint each block a solid color. They don’t all have to be the same color but keep them in the same color spectrum or within the color of their holiday. After you have painted them, rough them up a little bit with the sandpaper. These blocks look cutest when they aren’t perfect!
When you go to make the letters, unless you are a master calligrapher you may want to look to the internet for some font inspiration. There are so many amazing fonts out there to be inspired by!
This project is quite literally endless- it is limited only by your imagination! We have made wedding signs, welcome signs, holiday decor, and much more with this technique. If you make one, let us know! We would love to see.
