‘Wash Your Hands’ Wall Art

Today’s post features three different takes on the same inspiration piece. All three projects were inspired by the ‘Wash Your Hands’ and ‘Brush Your Teeth’ Wall Art from Land of Nod which retail for $89.00 each.

Erin from Décor Allure made these two signs for a friend’s bathroom. She simply recreated the pieces using a Microsoft program, following the same color scheme as the originals. She got them enlarged at Kinko’s to ensure optimal color quality and resolution and then popped them into Wal-mart frames that she spray painted white. Here’s the best part… they only cost her $7.00 to make.

Bathroom Message Signs

Mandi from Save it For a Rainy Day loved the Land of Nod signs but not the price or colors, as they simply didn’t coordinate with her recent bathroom mini makeover. She took a similar path, using Picnik to recreate the ‘Wash Your Hands’ design and then printing it through Snapfish. Mandi shows us again that DIY gives the freedom to modify catalog designs to fit within your home.

Finally, I will share my own version of this piece that I recently posted at my other blog Infarrantly Creative. Like Mandi, the colors of the Land of Nod designs would totally not work with my purple board and batten bathroom makeover. Therefore, I recreated the design in my Silhouette program and then cut it out on some frosted vinyl to achieve the look of etched glass. This was so simple but really lends a look of elegance. All you Silhouette users are welcome to download the file for free at my blog.

Doesn't it seem ridiculous that something so easily recreated on Word goes for $60 each. Is that art? He came up with a cute idea/saying, but so do the people who write greeting cards and they only sell for a couple of bucks each. If it was true art, it couldn't be recreated.

I get that you're trying to save a buck, but I recognize these signs from an artist I follow on Etsy, so please realize that you're not just knocking off some corporate decor site, you're knocking off a man who makes his living coming up with ideas like this.

Thank you for posting the Esty information! I just logged on there and bought two of his prints with matting directly from him for less than what one framed costs on Land of Nod! I will only deed to frame them when they arrive, but it will al in total be like a two for one when I'm done!

Exactly what I was going to post. ;)

I also noticed the post on how to make your own DIY Mark Rothko-Inspired Painting.

Same concept applies. There are many artists and graphic designers who make their living with their right brain, and they would appreciate it if you would respect that.
