Kelly from View Along the Way has a major crush on faceted lighting and décor. Fortunately, she also has a brilliant husband with mad woodworking skills who was able to create this dodecahedron light fixture, which is made of “30 pieces of wood cut at very exact, weird angles.” My head hurts just thinking about it! Kelly’s whole laundry room makeover is simply stunning, but this little light steals the show!
Bridgett from Osie Moats is not a fan of plastic laundry baskets since they usually end up broken after being used as stools by her boys. Ever since adding shelving to her bathroom, Bridgett knew she wanted a cottage-inspired laundry basket to fill the space below. However, she wasn’t about the drop a wad of cash on something that would be housing dirty, stinky clothes from three boys. Instead Bridgett gathered several items she already had to create a rustic laundry basket that fits her space to perfection – in both size and design!
Michelle from Chalkboard Blue wanted a fireplace so badly she built one herself. And not just any fireplace… a gorgeous fireplace with stately columns, paneling, and built-in bookcases on the sides. This was a major project that stretched Michelle outside her comfort zone, but guess what? She did it! The fireplace completely transforms the space and is a daily reminder to Michelle that she can do anything she sets her mind to!
When looking for a bed for her master bedroom, Bridgett from Osie Moats knew she wanted something “earthy, simple, and serene.” She found a bed from West Elm that fit her description but mostly definitely not her budget. Of course, a DIY was in order! Not only did building her own bed save Bridgett a pretty penny ($150 versus $1,099), but it also allowed her the flexibility to modify the dimensions to fit her large mattress.
Jaime from That’s My Letter didn’t disappoint when a friend requested a set of display shelves similar to those sold by Pottery Barn Kids. Jaime teamed up with Ana White to build shelves that can easily be customized to fit any wall space. Why spend $49 or even $79 (ouch!) for one simple shelf when you could build your own for only $11?!?
Heather from Sweet Number 9 immediately fell in love with a distressed wall ledge from Pottery Barn the moment she saw it. It was exactly what she needed to fill empty wall space that had been driving her crazy. Heather and her husband devised a plan to build their own shelf with some lumber and decorative molding. Their knock off is absolutely stunning and has become an immediate statement piece on the once annoyingly blank wall!
When her brother requested a toy box for his kiddos, Ayisha at The Pursuit of Handyness headed straight to Ana White for plans. Ayisha modified the dimensions to fit her brother’s designated space, drew out her cut list, and headed to a local lumber yard to score all her wood for only $29. Ayisha knew the toy box was a big hit when her little niece and nephew immediately climbed inside {Giggle}!
After building a small ledge for her bathroom, Laura from I’m Not A Trophy Wife knew she wanted a larger, chunkier version for above her bed and came up with some plans to build her own. This is a fabulous alternative to a mantel if you don’t have one and can even make a statement above a bed as a headboard. With the trim detail and distressed finish, it’s full of character and provides plenty of space for decorating.
