Holly, one of the crafty gals behind My Sister’s Suitcase and a contributor at Tatertots & Jello, is quick to admit that she has “West Elm taste on a thrift store budget.” It was their wood tile furniture that flipped Holly’s DIY switch and motivated her on to update her current dresser with wood shims. The shims facilitated the project, allowing Holly to work with only limited tools and avoid cutting a bunch of wood. I hope you enjoyed revisiting the most popular Pottery Barn projects featured over the past few years here at KOD. Today we are going to go a little starburst mirror crazy with two different DIY versions. The first comes from yours truly! I really love the classic look of these mirrors and decided to join the ranks of DIYers who have made their own. However, like I share at Infarrantly Creative, I think I’m the only crazy person who sanded and stained 150 shims to get the job done! Yikes! Trust me when I say that the end result totally makes it worth it though!

This morning I shared a sunburst mirror that was created with wood shims. Katie from Upcycled Treasures also used the handy little sticks to create décor for her walls. She painted, cut, and pieced together her shims to make a large piece of framed wood art. Katie strategically placed her new artwork over a metal door in her hallway that was quite the eyesore. Don’t you love the texture of the uneven shims?
