DIY Closet Makeover Using IKEA Pax Cabinets

DIY Closet Makeover Using IKEA Pax Cabinets hdr

Kristi from Making it in the Mountains just pulled off a truly inspiring IKEA Pax closet makeover.

She and her husband transformed a plain room—once his childhood bedroom—into a walk-in closet by cutting through the shared wall with their primary bedroom.

They started with IKEA Pax cabinets for their affordability and versatile organization options.

Then, they used IKEA’s online planning tool to design the layout and ordered through click-and-collect for convenience.

Instead of stopping there, they framed the cabinets to create a built-in look and added custom trim for a polished finish.

Kristi even crafted new drawer fronts to achieve an inset style, elevating the entire space.

The result is a closet that feels completely custom, yet was achieved on a budget (which we all appreciate!).

  • IKEA Pax wardrobes and components
  • 3/4″ MDF for drawer fronts
  • Trim and molding for framing
  • Wood glue and construction adhesive
  • Paint and primer
  • Basic tools (drill, saw, sander, level, etc.)

Quick Steps

  1. Plan the layout using IKEA’s Pax planning tool.
  2. Order and assemble the Pax wardrobes.
  3. Build a base and secure the wardrobes in place.
  4. Frame around the wardrobes with trim for a built-in look.
  5. Cut and attach custom drawer fronts for an inset style.
  6. Fill seams, caulk, and sand for a smooth finish.
  7. Paint the entire unit for a cohesive, custom appearance.

Key Tips

  • Use MDF for smooth, clean drawer fronts that paint well.
  • Take your time with framing—level and measure carefully.
  • Label all Pax parts during assembly to avoid confusion.
