After finally achieving her dream of purchasing a beach cottage, Susan from Endless Summer now gets the fun task of decorating it. She had been holding onto a picture of a coastal bedroom from Pottery Barn for just the occasion, and it sported a lovely wall shelf with dentil molding above the bed that Susan absolutely loved. Her sweet husband came to the rescue, creating not one but seven shelves from a dismantled headboard. All it ended up costing was the dentil molding!
The Pottery Barn Sawhorse Console Table costs $500, but Heidi from Honeybear Lane created this lookalike for only $20. Along with being crazy cheap to make, it’s also incredibly simple. Heidi used barstools that she already had, but you can find them at most thrift stores for next to nothing. Heidi says, “Just purchase some lumber and stain and you can create this expensive table for a much more reasonable price. It’s also a very easy beginner builder project.”
Kristin of Finley Gray was flipping through Pottery Barn’s catalog when she laid eyes on their Rebecca Trunk, a trunk-style coffee table inspired by an Amish hope chest. Kristin was immediately smitten and just so happened to have an old trunk sitting in her bedroom. Since Kristin is having a love affair with aqua lately, she decided to let the trunk join the ranks and made it over using her own special paint concoction. Here’s what Kristin says about her old-made-new trunk: “I love the way it turned out!… it gives me the same sparkly LOVE IT feelings the original did in the catalog.”
A desire to display her photographs led Elena from `a casarella to Pottery Barn, where she fell in love with a linen pinboard. Of course, what Elena didn’t love was the price of $159, so she made her own for under $20 using items from the hardware store. I love Elena’s mission to “free the pictures” that are usually “stuck” inside phones and computers, and her DIY pinboard is the perfect backdrop!
Riva from Uno, Dos, Tres Chic shares her secret for creating beautiful stacks of aged books like you see all through the pages of home décor catalogs. Riva’s process involves tearing the cover off of cheapo books, giving the binding and pages a special soak, and then “accessorizing” the books with a little wear and tear. Once dry, the books are ready to be tied and put out on display. You would never believe these were crisp, new books just a few days before!
Sharon from The Blue Willow House has been decorating her grandson’s bedroom at her house with a Pottery Barn Kids-inspired nautical theme. One of the things she loved about the inspiration room was a chalkboard initial that serves as both wall décor and a fun place for doodles. Sharon created her own with a wooden letter, craft paint, and a sample of chalkboard coating she already had. This is a fun combination of two popular trends in the décor world, wall initials and decorative chalkboards.
With brown furniture and few windows in her family room, Nan from You Could Make That wanted to find a way to lighten up the space. She decided new pillows were in order and created four different designs using, stencils, craft paint, and white denim. Nan says, “Four new pillows, inspired by Horchow and Pottery Barn, for the price of some denim – a far cry from the $100 plus price tag!”
Riva from Uno, Dos, Très Chic is not a fan of traditional baby motifs, so this chevron painted rug was the perfect addition to her son’s nursery. Riva created her chevron design but cutting over 200 rectangles from freezer paper. (How’s that for dedication?) I really like how Riva alternated the two slightly different shades of blue, as it adds a bit more visual interest. Most importantly, it looks like Riva’s little man likes his new stylin’ rug.
